I used to be in my feelings when older people in my family would say that you should date or marry someone who is on equal footing as you. I thought that was snobbishness personified. But as I matured, I realized that they actually knew what they were talking about. Simone Biles put the spotlight on her husband Jonathan Owens. He was the equivalent of what's called a D-lister in Hollywood, only for him, it's in the NFL.
No one but diehard football fans had the slightest idea of who he was, and even then, some individuals had to think about it. But to have the gall to sit there in front of Biles and basically act as if HE was the catch and then went on to further humiliate his wife and try to negate her achievements, is the ultimate in ignorance and toxic masculinity. No Owens, you are NOT a catch. As a matter of fact, if Simone took the rose colored glasses off, was more mature and worldly with less traumatic baggage, she would have left him where she found him from the get-go.
I feel that Simone is looking for something that unfortunately, she probably won't be able to find with Owens. Owens is one of those delusional young men who thinks that ALL women should just fall at his feet because he merely exists. Young women like Biles, Keke Palmer, Halle Bailey and others, have these man/child toxically masculine partners, who need to humiliate and degrade them in order to make themselves feel like the big men on campus. They want to bring these women down to their level, instead of making a concerted effort to come up to their level. No woman should ever accept being intentionally embarrassed by their husband or boyfriend in private or publically. I hope that as Simone matures, and if this becomes a pattern of behavior with Owens, she'll act accordingly and do what's best for her.
